The Jonah Natural Gas Field The field is approximately 32 miles (51 km) south of Pinedale and 65 miles (105 km) north of Rock Springs in SW Wyoming, and is estimated to contain 10.5 trillion cubic feet (297 billion cubic meter) of natural gas.

Jonah Gas Field--Sublette County, Wyoming This portion of Sublette County, WY hosts Jonah Field: one of the largest on-shore discoveries in the last fifteen years. The Google Earth viewer is transformed into a data-rich information system by linking well locations to the vast (and free) data collections available on the Wyoming Oil and Gas Commission website. The township/section grid provided for free by the Bureau of Land Management supplies further orientation.

Jonah Natural Gas Field, upper Green River valley, Wyoming, 2004 Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) satellite image from August 4, 2004, showing the Jonah natural gas field. Graded well pads and connecting access roads are clearly visible. Each pad covers an area of 3-4 acres. Open pits of waste drilling fluids appear as blue spots on many of the pads. Bright green coloration of many of the pads and roads in the field indicate that grass or other vegetation has recently been planted and some form of reclamation is being attempted. Area shown is about 7 miles across. At least 500 well pads have been installed; BLM has just released plans to allow the installation of over 3,000 additional well pads in this area. Note that drilling has now spread well beyond the area shown in this image, to the east, northeast and southwest.

Jonah Gas Field Aerial Sublette County, Wyoming Roads, gas drilling pads, produced water ponds, and compressor stations fragment the land in this aerial view of the Jonah Natural Gas Field, near Pinedale, Wyoming. The Jonah Field was the first mega-gas field opened with advances in fracking, or hydraulic fracturing drilling techniques.
